Birth, Death, Marriage and Divorce Notification

■ Family Register (Koseki) |
|
The koseki (family registration system) provides official authentication of a Japanese person’s name, date of birth, parents’ names, family relationships, spouse, and other personal information.
|
|
■ Household (Setai) |
|
Household (setai) refers to a group of people living together and dependent on the same source of livelihood. Head of the household refers to the representative of the household, or the person maintaining the source of livelihood. Friends are not part of the household.
|
|
■ Family Register Notification Forms |
|
Foreign residents must also file notification forms for births and deaths that take place in Japan. You may also file notification forms for marriages and divorces. There is no fee for filing a notification form.

|
■ Birth Notification
|
|
The mother or father should complete the designated birth notification procedures within 14 days of the birth, at either the city office of the place of birth or the parent’s present address.
Also, please be sure to complete the following procedures:
1. Application for visa status and period of
stay at the Tokyo Regional Immigration
Bureau within 30 days of the birth.
2. Notification of acquisition of visa status and
period of stay (Bring the child’s passport and
foreign resident registration card to the Foreign Resident Registration Counter
of the Family and Resident Registration Division
of the City Office within 14 days of acquisition.
3. Procedures designated by your home country

■ Death Notification
|
|
A family member or person living in the same household should complete the designated death notification procedures within seven days of learning of the death of the person in question. This should be done at either the municipal office where the death took place, or at the city office of the applicant's current address.
The required document to be filed is the death notification form (which includes a section of certification to be completed by the examining physician).

■ Marriage Notification |
|
People are considered legally married from the day the marriage notification form is filed. If you marry a Japanese national, you may file the form at the municipal office of either the Japanese spouse's permanent domicile or the current address. For marriages between two foreign residents, file the form at the city office for your place of residence.

■ Divorce Notification |
|
|
As with marriage, people are considered legally divorced from the day the divorce notification form is filed. If you divorce a Japanese national, you may file the form at the municipal office of either the Japanese spouse’s permanent domicile or the current address. For divorces between two foreign residents, file the form at the city office for your place of residence.
